1999… when it really started to take off

Golden business years. I had to travel to the US several times for training. I figured out that keeping a weekend in between made the flight tickets cheaper… and therefor I could add additional stops for leisure while saving money for the company… I think I was lucky that I was equipped with a laptop from work, had an email address and a fax number. Internet was limited. Surfing took time as it went over an analogue phone line. Books and paper maps were my best friends. Confirmations of hotels and cars came in by fax. And off you went with your paper baggage, hoping you would not lose anything. I was fearless and impulsive and apparently a very good navigator… driving across the US, finding my way with only a map and no GPS.

Photography started to grow on me as well. In those days – and God they seem so far away – we only had analogue cameras. For a multiday trip I took 107 pictures. For the same type of trip I would probably shoot a few thousands now…Selfies were difficult to take (it didn’t have a name back then…) and you never knew if pictures were good or not. Everything was one big surprise. You had to be patient as well: get back from your trip, go to the store, submit them for development, pay for 24 hour or 48 hour service?, at 12/24 or 36 pictures per role… And finally, I learned I loved to hike, as a means to a goal, to get to nice picture spots.
